I Am Sober vs Door 24: which should you use?

I Am Sober is the biggest sobriety counter on the App Store and it is genuinely good at what it does: a daily pledge, a clean day count, and an enormous community. Door 24 is built for the part that comes after the count. A slip restarts an I Am Sober clock from zero. In Door 24 it moves a 42 day rolling average instead, and the Proofs you captured stay on your timeline.

If you have searched for a sobriety app in the last five years, you have seen I Am Sober. It is the category leader, it earned that, and any honest comparison starts there.

I Am Sober vs Door 24: the short answer

Use I Am Sober if you want the largest community in recovery, a free tier that does not expire, and a clean daily pledge attached to a day count. Use Door 24 if the day count is the part that keeps failing you: if you have watched a number reset to zero after one night and felt like the previous ninety days were deleted.

That is the actual difference. Everything else is detail.

What I Am Sober does well

Credit where it is due, because you will not get a useful decision out of a comparison that pretends the other app is bad.

The daily pledge is a real mechanic, not a gimmick. You commit in the morning and review at night. That is a better design than passive counting, and Door 24 uses the same idea inside a Crew.

The community is genuinely enormous. Their own marketing claims more than 11 million shared stories. In August 2026 the App Store showed roughly 4.9 stars from about 186,000 ratings, with more than 10 million installs on Google Play. Nothing in this category is close to that scale, and on a bad night at 2am, scale means somebody is awake.

The free tier is real. Two tracked habits, free, with no expiry. Their FAQ is unusually direct about it: most of the app is free to use, and Sober Plus is optional.

It covers more than substances. Alcohol, nicotine, drugs, and also self harm, shopping, skin picking and custom entries.

Where Door 24 is built differently

The number does not reset

This is the whole reason Door 24 exists. I Am Sober's FAQ describes what happens after a slip plainly: the current clock starts from zero and milestones are recalculated from the new date. Your archive survives, and that matters, but the number you actually look at every morning goes back to nothing.

Door 24 does not have that number. Your Growth Score is a 42 day rolling average of consistency, so a hard day bends the line and the weeks underneath it stay where they are. You come back to a trend, not to zero. If you have quit and restarted several times, which is the normal shape of quitting anything, that difference is not cosmetic. It is the difference between a tool that agrees with the voice telling you it was all for nothing, and one that does not.

Something to do when the craving lands

I Am Sober has a pledge, a journal, urge tracking and a workbook. What we could not find anywhere in their materials is a structured action for the moment itself.

Door 24's Daily Quests are five minute real world actions, sorted into Right Now, Level Up, Get Out and Go Wild. You open one when the urge arrives and you come out the other side having done something, rather than having spent the hour resisting. A finished quest feeds your Growth Score and can become a Proof.

Proof instead of a number

Both apps let you attach photos. The difference is what the app treats as progress.

In I Am Sober, progress is the count and photos decorate it. In Door 24, Proofs of Progress are the progress: a photo, a video, a voice note or a line of text, timestamped onto a dated timeline. The morning you woke up clear. The wedding you got through and remember. On the night you are arguing with yourself, a photograph of the person you are becoming is a stronger argument than a figure on a screen.

Who should pick which

Pick I Am Sober if you want the biggest room in recovery, you want a free tier that never runs out, you want an Apple Watch app, or the day count genuinely motivates you. For plenty of people it does, and if it is working there is no reason to move.

Pick Door 24 if the reset is what keeps breaking you, if you want a specific action for the hour rather than a place to log that the hour was hard, or if you want a record you can look at rather than a number you can lose. Try Door 24 free on iOS and Android.

Honestly, use both if you want I Am Sober's community alongside a rolling record. Nothing stops you, and some people do exactly that.

Where our bias sits

We build Door 24, so read this the way you would read any comparison written by one of the two. Every claim about I Am Sober here comes from their own App Store listing, Google Play listing and FAQ, checked in August 2026, and their pricing and features change. Check the current listing before you decide.

If you want the argument underneath all of this rather than the feature list, read why streaks backfire and how to measure sobriety progress.

Frequently asked

Is I Am Sober free?

There is a real free tier, which is one of its genuine strengths. Free accounts track two habits. Sober Plus, listed on the App Store in August 2026 at $9.99 per month with annual tiers between $29.99 and $39.99, raises that to ten and unlocks the workbook, full urge history, cloud backup, group creation and the Apple Watch app. Door 24 is also free to start, with an optional Door 24 Plus subscription.

Does I Am Sober reset your progress if you relapse?

It restarts the clock, not the archive. Their own FAQ says the current clock starts from zero and milestones are recalculated from the new date, while previous start dates, milestone history, reasons, savings data and photos are all kept. So your history survives as a record of past attempts. What restarts is the number you look at every day.

What does Door 24 do that I Am Sober does not?

Three things. A Growth Score, which is a 42 day rolling average of consistency rather than a streak, so a bad day bends a line instead of resetting a counter. Daily Quests, five minute actions built for the moment a craving lands, which I Am Sober has no equivalent of. And Proofs, where a photo, video, voice note or journal entry is the unit of progress rather than a number.

Can both apps track more than one habit?

Yes, and this is not a real difference between them. I Am Sober tracks two habits free and up to ten on Sober Plus. Door 24 tracks up to ten. If multi habit tracking is your only requirement, either will do it.
